Lassithi Plateau

Lasithi Plateau is an area that stretches 11km in the E-W direction and 6 km in the N-S direction. It is about 70 km east of Heraklion and lays at an average altitude of 840 m. The Plateau is known for its white windmills, which had been used for centuries to irrigate the land.
According to mythology, goddess Rea gave birth to the god Zeus and then hid him there from his father Kronos.
Despite their large number (about 10,000) most of them have been abandoned. In Lassithi plateau you can visit the famous cave called Diktaio Andron in which, according to mythology, goddess Rea gave birth to the god Zeus and then hid him there from his father Kronos.
